On Sunday, July 19, Moroccan poet Yassin Adnan toasted Montalvo’s anniversaries with mint tea atop the rooftop terrace of Le Grand Balcon Café Glacier café in Marrakech, overlooking the legendary Jemaa el-Fnaa square, a UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. It was 43° Celsius (109.4° Fahrenheit) that evening. Yassin gave a reading of the English translation of a poem written when he was in residence at the Lucas Artists Program.
The poem is grounded in the landscape of Montalvo and Silicon Valley, and describes the landscape at Montalvo, as well as a visit Yassin made to San Francisco’s North Beach and City Lights Café during his residency. The poem draws a thread between the hearts of California’s Bay Area and his own home—Marrakech, mother of gardens.
Yassin writes: “Best regards and congratulations for the 75th anniversary of Montalvo’s artist’s residency program and the 10th anniversary of the Lucas Artists Residency Program!”

In City Lights, in the famous City Lights, the bookstore in San Francisco, there in North Beach, I met the gang one by one on a Sunday morning. It wasn't a meeting, but I pictured them having a late morning drink in Vesuvio Café. And in the little alley linking City Lights and the darkened bar, a girl with sleepy eyes is singing Bob Dylan. A Chinese man from the neighborhood behind is dancing. And the girl is knocking on heaven’s door again and again. And she’s playing. She’s knocking and singing. The guitar weeps under her fingers and passersby stop. Some sing along and some disrupt the reeling dance of the Chinese man. The street fair in the alley is jammed with visitors from the time of the poets. Two girls are selling feathers and the dreams of American Indians. A pregnant girl barely past twenty is smoking like crazy and displaying two hats and a dress. A man is selling books and water pipes. The Chinese dancer looks drunk and free. I doubt he knows any of you. But the guitar is weeping under the fingertips of the guitarist of 10 am.
So let’s knock on heaven's door

ورَقائقِ أشباهِ الموصِلات
بين أوراقِ شجر الغار
وشرائحِ السِّليكون
العناكبُ تنسجُ آلاف الخيوط
بين الشجر الكثيف الملْتَفّ
في سفوحِ جبال سانتا كروز[5]
والخلايا الشمسية المصَنَّعَة
لم تكن الأيائِلُ معنيةً بما تحيكُه العناكب
للوادي
ولا ذئابُ البراري
ولا أسَدُ الكوجار [6]

في الCity Lights ، في مكتبةِ "السيتي لايتس" [12]الأشهَرِ في سان فرانسيسكو، هنالِكَ في "النورث بيتش" North Beach، التقيتُ العِصَابةَ فرْدًا فردًا صباحَ الأحد. ليس لقاءً، لكني تخيلتُهم يشرَبُون كأسَ الضُّحى بمقهى "فيزوف" Vesuvio [13]. وفي الزقاق الصغير الممتدِّ ما بين "أضواء المدينة" والحانة المعتمة، كانت فتاةٌ بعينين ناعستين تغنِّي بوب ديلان Bob Dylan [14]
صينيٌّ من سكان الحي الخلفي يرقصُ. والبنت تطرُقُ بابَ الجنَّةِ[15] وتُعيد. وتعزفُ. تطرقُ وتغني. والقيثارة تنشِجُ بين أنامِلِها والمارة يقفُون قليلًا. البعض يغنِّي معها والبعضُ يُشاغِب رقصَ الصينيِّ المترنِّحِ. الزُّقاقُ السُّوقُ يغصُّ برُوادٍ من زمن الشعراء. بنتانِ تبيعان الرِّيشَ وأحلامَ الهنود الحمر. صَبِيةٌ حُبلى، بالكاد تجاوزت العشرين، تُدخِّن بجنونٍ وتعرضُ قُبَّعتَينِ وفُستانًا.بائعُ كتبٍ وغَلايِين. والراقصُ الصينيُّ يبدو حُرًّا سكران. هو لا يعرفكم، أشكُّ بذلك. لكن القيثارة كانت تنشِجُ بين أنامل عازفةِ العاشرة صباحًا
